Incumbent serves as Animal Care Technician for the Animal Shelter, responsible for cleaning animal kennels and caring for the wild/stray and owner surrendered animals in the County.
DUTIES:
Maintains cleanliness of kennels, including sweeping, mopping, washing/disinfecting cells and cages, and removing trash.
Cleans animal food bowls and removes animal droppings.
Provides care to ensure health of animals, including vaccinating, de-worming, washing, and microchipping.
Provides food and water for animals.
Provides care to ensure mental health of the animals, begins training, and performs behavior assessments to ensure that the animals will do as well as possible in shelter environments.
Ensures that the animals will have a proper diet and feeding schedules and administers medication to the animals.
Adheres to the veterinary plans/constant observation of medical conditions, concerns, and/or possible issues, and reports concerns as required.
Helps in the activity management of community service workers and helps manage donations in the building.
Assists the public with animal adoptions and visitations.
Performs related duties as assigned.
I.
JOB REQUIREMENTS AND DIFFICULTY OF WORK:
High school diploma or GED.
Working knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling, and punctuation, ability to understand and animalwarden follow written and oral communications, and ability to read and understand labels.
Working knowledge of Department policies and procedures and ability to apply such knowledge.
Ability to physically perform essential duties of job, including lifting/carrying items weighing over 50 pounds, bending, stooping, crouching, stretching, and prolonged standing/walking.
Ability to operate hand and/or power tools such as, screwdrivers, wrenches, shovel, mops, broom, and hammer.
Ability to work alone and with others in a team environment, work on several tasks at the same time, and work rapidly for long periods, often under time pressure.
Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other County departments, and the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities, and disabilities.
Ability to comply with all employer and department polices and work rules, including but not limited to attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.
Ability to provide public access to or maintain confidentiality of department records and information according to State requirements.
Ability to understand, memorize, retain and carry out written or oral instructions and present findings in oral or written form.
Ability to competently serve the public with diplomacy and respect, including occasional encounters with irate and/or emotional individuals.
Ability to occasionally work extended and/or weekend hours.
II.
RESPONSIBILITY:
Incumbent performs simple, repetitive tasks with priorities primarily determined by a customary, flexible routine and supervisor.
Incumbent's duties require limited care and skill to prevent damage to tools and equipment and prevent injury to self and others.
Incumbent maintains frequent contact with co-workers and the public for the purpose of exchanging information.
Errors in work are usually prevented and/or detected through prior instruction and supervisory review.
Undetected errors could result in endangerment to self or others, damage to equipment, inconvenience to other agencies or the public, and loss of time and money to correct error.
Incumbent reports directly to the Shelter Manager.
III.
PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Incumbent Incumbent's duties involve sitting and walking at will, sitting/standing/walking for long periods, pushing/pulling/lifting/carrying items weighing over 50 pounds, bending, reaching, crouching/kneeling, handling/grasping/fingering objects, hearing animalwarden sounds/communication, speaking clearly, close/far vision, and color and depth perception.
IV.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Incumbent performs a majority of duties in an animal confinement center.
Incumbent works in extreme hot or cold temperatures, wet/icy surroundings with slippery surfaces, near fumes, odors, dust or dirt such as feces, urine, blood, hair, feathers, etc.
, and with or near chemicals, such as cleaning supplies.
Incumbent works in a noisy environment with barking dogs, and works in confined areas, such as kennels.
Safety precautions must be followed at all times to avoid injury to self and others, and incumbent must wear protective clothing or equipment, such as long pants, non-slip shoes, and gloves.
Incumbent may be exposed to irate/emotional individuals and responds to situations involving potential physical harm to self and others, such as aggressive animals.
Incumbent regularly works weekend hours, and occasionally extended hours.
